Pronoun adalah kata yang digunakan sebagai pengganti noun. Pronoun yang menempati subjek pada sebuah kalimat disebut nominative case, dan jika menempati objek disebut objective case.

Contoh : John has a pen.  John like the pen.
Maka dari pada nounnya diulang-ulang, lebih baik diganti sama pronoun menjadi :

John has a pen. He like it.

Ternyata pronoun ada banyak macamnya, diantaranya :

Personal Pronoun, yakni pronoun khusus untuk mengganti nama orang.  Personal pronoun itu sendiri terbagi menjadi 3 bagian, yaitu personal pronoun orang pertama, kedua dan ketiga.
Contoh personal pronoun first person : I, me, mine, we, us, ours.
Contoh personal pronoun second  person : you, yours.
Contoh personal pronoun third person : he, him, his, she, her, hers, they, them, theirs, it.

Berdasarkan jumlah banyaknya, personal pronoun terbagi 2 bagian, yaitu :
1. Singular pronoun
2. Plural pronoun

Contoh singular pronoun sebagai subyek : I, you, he, she, it.
Contoh singular pronoun sebagai  obyek : me, you, him, her, it.
Contoh plural pronoun sebagai  subyek : we, you, they.
Contoh plural pronoun sebagai   obyek : us, you, them.

Possessive Pronoun yaitu pronoun yang menunjukkan kepemilikan, yaitu : mine, ours, yours, his, hers, theirs.
Contoh :
This pen is mine.
Is this book yours ?
This house is theirs.

Possessive Pronoun juga mempunyai 2 bentuk, yaitu :
1. Singular: mine, yours, his, hers, its.
2. Plural : ours, yours, theirs.

Demonstrative Pronoun, yaitu pronoun untuk mengganti kata tunjuk dekat dan jauh, yaitu this dan that (singular) serta these dan those (plural).
Contoh :
This is my book.
Those are ours cars.

Interrogative Pronoun, yaitu pronoun yang dipakai untuk kata tanya yakni who, whose, which, what.
Contoh : Who came ? (artinya : sama dengan Which person came ?)

Relative Pronoun yaitu pronoun yang bertugas mengganti dan menggabungkan antara dua buah kalimat. Biasanya memakai who, what, wich, whom, whose.
Contoh : She is the girl. I like her. Digabung menjadi :
She  is the girl whom I like.

Reflexive Pronoun ialah pronoun untuk menunjukan pekerjaan yang dia kerjakan sendiri, dalam hal ini oleh subyek.
Contoh :
He killed himself.
She lost herself.

Emphasizing Pronoun adalah pronoun untuk penguatan dari subyek.
Contoh :
I myself did it.
She herself told this to me.

Indefinite Pronoun yaitu pronoun yang menunjukan seseorang atau benda secara umum. Biasanya menggunakan kata one, anyone, someone, no one, none, any, anybody, anything, some, somebody, something, everybody, nobody, few, many, others, all day.
Contoh : One must do one's duty. (One = person)

Distributive Pronoun adalah kata-kata seperti each, either, neither. Verb setelah kata-kata tersebut harus singular.
Contoh : Each comes up in his turn.
